Warnken The Grand Master's Monthly Message for February, 1974 As we meet and talk with our members during our travels here and there, the subject of meditation is always prominent in our conversa- tions. The choice of subject is very good, for meditation is to the mystic as water is to the swimmer. Universal peace and brotherhood could be realized so much sooner and easier if everyone understood the correct technique for meditation and practiced it. Meditation is not a panacea, but it is a very important first step. Those who have developed the habit of meditation are becoming masters of their own lives and contributing significantly to the betterment of our world community. This brief message cannot serve as a complete course in the tech- nique of meditation. Rather it seeks to direct the thoughts of those who hear it toward a closer study of meditation as found in our Mono- graphs. Then, it hopes to inspire determination to practice meditation for the attainment of the mystical mastery of life with more abundant happiness, greater accomplishment, and Peace Profound. It 'CAN' be done and 'EACH' of us can do it! 'WHY MEDITATE?' The reason we are taught and encouraged to medi- tate is because we are dual beings; an outer, objective, physical self, and an inner, subjective, spiritual self. Both aspects of self are necessary and serve a purpose or they would not exist. To ignore or suppress one in favor of the other is an error and not in accordance with natural law. Some of us through carelessness or laziness, or spiritual fervor, neglect our physical bodies until they begin to break down. Then we surrender ourselves into the hands of various kinds of healers, hoping to compensate for neglect. Sometimes it is too late. The health and strength of both our inner and outer selves are inter-related. Each needs the other as long as we are permitted the gift of physical life. Despite the overcrowded hospitals and very busy doctors of many kinds trying to restore our neglected physical bodies, these physical selves are relatively less in need than our spiritual selves. Always around us at any time and in any place, there are many who are be- sieged with multitudinous inner problems which gnaw at their psyche making them spiritually ill and unable to cope with daily life. They are victims of their jealousy, envy, hatred, and greed. They are those who feel that the Cosmic has bestowed many blessings upon others but withheld from them. They are the unfortunates who think that their physical and intellectual selves are all there is. They fail to realize that the outer self is but a reflection of the ailing inner self. As student mystics we are learning that we must meditate in order to recognize and realize that we are but a part of the great self -- Soul. By learning to 'LISTEN' mystically in meditation we can recieve inspiration, instruction, and strength to change, to improve, to create, and to truly live in the greater sense. We are not the enslaved; subject to the whims of that great Cosmic Mind. We are a part of that great Cosmic Mind and inseperable if only we will realize it through meditation. All that we can need or want for our envolvement is now in potential in that great Cosmic Mind. Think not of me and it; think of us! Know that those who appear to be causing our problems are truly but another aspect of ourselves. We must meditate because we must learn of our oneness. 'WHEN TO MEDITATE?' Time is so often blamed for failure to medi- tate. Let us recall our Monograph instruction that time and space are man-made concepts. It is our outer, thinking selves that designate time and space. The inner self which is an aspect of the Cosmic knows neither time nor space. The Cosmic Source from which we draw our inspiration, aid, and instruction IS. It is avaliable to us whenever and wherever we seek it. Could there be anything more loving and just than this truth? When the mystical neophyte begins training, regular habits are taught and encouraged, just as a child's formal education begins with the most simple and basic principles. But study nights and Sanctum Periods are given us to help us in establishing good habits of prac- tice and to enable us to realize the existence of the Cosmic and its inexhaustible bounty. As we mature mystically, we need not restrict ourselves to the limitations of our primary studies. As Adepts we should recognize the omnipresence of our Source and commune with it as the need or opportunity arises. We may even aspire toward constant communion. It is sometimes suggested that we should require longer periods of meditation in our ritualistic Convocations. Sometimes it is sug- gested that we have too much. Remember that time is a human concept. Group meditation in our Convocations is but an extension of our early Neophyte training to establish good practicing habits personally. It is not intended that such meditation periods provide 'ALL' of the practice of the student. If this constitutes the total effort, it is a lost cause for that student. The evolving mystical student learns to meditate anytime and any- where. Problems, discouragement, and frustrations occur at unexpected times and places in our lives. When we are thus confronted, we must learn to "step aside" from the time-space environment momentarily and commune with the Cosmic, yes, 'MEDITATE' for inspiration, strength, or whatever we need. It will not fail! This may occur during work at our place of employment, during a family crisis at home. It often occurs when we are alone in one of our negative, black, or self-pitying moods. The answer is the same; Turn to the Cosmic, meditate, and listen. 'HOW TO MEDITATE?' Our first thought is to ask, "How to breathe?" but that would not be helpful. Yet, immediately after birth, the infant breathes. It does not know how to breathe, or even that it is breathing, but it does. Just so, perhaps, we all meditate at times of crisis even if not effectively or properly. One of the functions of our Order is to guide its members in developing mystical techniques such as meditation. We urge again that the individual member refer to the Monographs for complete instruction. This is but a resume'. While learning, try to establish the habit of meditation through regular practice at the same time, same place -- as much as possible. Take steps to be comfortable only so as to be less aware of the physical self. Relax, relax, relax. Meditation is of the inner self. Tension, discomfort, and pain are of the outer self. Lose consciousness of surroundings, of body, of feeling. When there is consciousness of only the I AM, imagine consciously drifting away and upward. Lose identity; simply BE. Listen, listen, listen. Do not pray; do not visulize. Be still -- and listen. There will be opportunity to realize 'LATER' that you dwell in om- niscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence. All is love. All is glory. All is good and beauty. Stay. Rest a timeless and eternal second. Gradually revert to consciousness of the outer self and the school of experience. Feel the renewed vigor, the state of calm and serenity, the inspiration and the resolve to face and solve the necessary problems of an evolving soul personality. Note the renewed attitude of love and tolerance toward all others. Realize that those pressing problems and negative thoughts are now not nearly so depressing as they were before. Eventually, we can learn through constant practice to follow this and similar techniques under seemingly impossible conditions. There are those developing "masters" who can so meditate at their office desks, in a busy household, driving a vehicle, walking in a park or forest, or almost anywhere at anytime. Each of us 'CAN', if we will! Forget restrictions; simply practice more meditation.
