I Ching: Contextuals A CONTEXTU.TXT *********************************************************************** [I just subbing in and then unsubbing to give you the following text (in two postings). It attempts to give more detail on the groups of hexagram pairings that emerge when we consider my previously posted contextual hexagram model. To refresh the memory, it is my submission that every hexagram can serve as the context for another hexagram other than that hexagram's opposite. When we include changing lines, every hexagram has sixty-four possible contexts ( that means it can exist in it's own context as well as that of the other sixty-three hexagrams). To keep things simple, since none of this seems to have been done before, we stick to the single line-change model, where contextual development is a refining process starting at the base line and moving upwards. This means that a hexagram exists that describes the context of the base line for any hexagram under explicit consideration, and that this context is the gross (unrefined) context for the considered hexagram. As we approach the top line of the considered hexagram, so the degree of contextual 'character' becomes more specific. At line 6 the hexagram is in it's own context and thus not discussed here. Line 5 is therefore the closest context we can have. Furthermore, I submit that every hexagram serves to describe the unidirectional process of going from another hexagram to that hexagram's structural opposite. This too is included in this 'short' note. (e.g. going from 1 to 2 is represented by hexagram 23 (cutting back, pruning) and going from 2 to 1 is represented by hexagram 43 (spreading out, cuttings, planting)) For a detailed description of the methodology used to discover these patterns I refer the users to the texts in the archives of hexagram-8. But to keep it simple, we can use the short-cut method for determining a hexagram's gross context and that is by changing a hexagram's top and bottom lines. The determination of the line 5 context requires the methodology (or a degree of trust from the reader!) as does the understanding of the descriptive concepts. For those of you who have the time - contemplate on this material, there are a lot of parts that are 'stunning' in their 'exactness' whereas others raise questions. If you do not have time then dont waste what you have got - press the delete button now! For those of you who seem to be slightly uneasy about my work I will offer the following compromise - since I have been able to link other material into this (i.e. any dichotomously derived typology) I will call this material I Ching Plus, or I Ching +, or simply IC+. That way the purists amongst you can remain safe and secure. :-). However, I still feel that the patterns discovered were in some degree known to the originators of the system ( and I *dont* mean the Duke of Chou or King Wen but then perhaps books on the patterns were burnt in the 200BCE book-burnings as I Ching apocryphalia (?)). Either that or my dichotomy template is 'spot-on' and my discovery of these patterns stems from my mearly continuing the original work but at a more refined level. Thus the I Ching can be used with other dichotomously derived systems to give a good detailed 'map' of the different 'meanings' that emerge resulting from dichotomization. If the universe has a dichotomously derived part, then a degree of resonance can occur. (see the archives for a few of the different dichotomously derived maps and the template.) Any comments, questions etc please email me: c/o Diana.Diamond@anu.edu.au Most importantly - take your time going through this. The feedback I have received on previous posts from a few of you suggests that this is not all 'me' and we are on to something of 'value' as well as 'fact' (although those who have developed belief systems on dichotomously derived typologies to the extent that the typology forms part of one's 'identity/security' may object to this.). Take a set at a time and the pairs within the set. This may appear as 'light reading' but it is not. Take care, Chris Lofting ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Intro: In the following, the context hexagrams refer to the gross base context of a hexagram - set in line 1, and the immediate context set in line 5. I emphasize these two as they give a good comparison of the refined contextual development as we move up the hexagram and get closer to line 6. (combining the meanings of the two help define the hexagram. e.g. for 49 we have a combination of withdrawl (33) and guidance (30) implying a structured/intentional process of pulling back. The meaning of the hexagram's name - KO is: Taking off the covering, skin or hide; change, renew, molt; remove, peel off revolt, overthrow; degrade from office; leather; armour, soldiers; eliminate, repeal, cut off, cut away. The ideogram portrays an animal skin stretched on a frame. (from ERANOS/KARCHER texts). Thus the base context leads into the immediate context which develops into the hexagram under consideration.) I have included the ERANOS definitions of the chinese names for each hex to enable comparisons to the suggested context derived from the contextual hexagrams. (note that some of the chinese names appear to be identical. They are not in that the ideogram is different). The names used other than the ERANOS/KARCHER names are from my own 'contemplations' on the many decriptions of the hexagrams - these names are still 'fluid' since we are attempting to give meaning to emotional states. The hexagrams are thus like attractors where many variations on a theme circle the core. My use of names has therefore been 'casual'. Main refs: Ritsema R., & Karcher S.,(1994) "I Ching" Element books, Shaftsbury, Dorset ISBN 1-85230-536-3 Below this is referenced as "ERANOS" since it is from the ERANOS foundation's I Ching Project (1988-1994) that the text developed. A full ref list of all the material considered in IC+ can also be found in the hexagram-8 archives. For each set of hexagram pairs (set A to set H) the relationships are stressed working from left to right. e.g. in set A we have: SET A <- 01,02 <- 23,43 <- 52,58 <- 10,15 <- first is outlined the descriptive nature of the second pair (23,43) on the first pair (01,02), followed by the individual contexts of the first pair hexgrams with the ERANOS/KARCHER details on the specific hexagram's name. We then cover the third group's affect on the second group etc. finishing with the first group's affect on the fourth group. We then go to the next set. For size purposes this document is split into two postings (Contextual A and Contextual B) with sets A to D in this posting and the second posting covering Sets E to H. ============================================================================ The sets: Using the contextual data previously posted, we see emerge pairs of hexagrams that form a balanced unit of four pairs, where using their claimed descriptive characteristics, the pairs link-up thus: SET A <- 01,02 <- 23,43 <- 52,58 <- 10,15 <- ------------------------------------------------------------------ 01 expansion leading to 02 contraction is described by 23 cutting back. 02 contraction leading to 01 expansion is described by 43 spreading out. the base context of 01 is 28 - too much (exceeding) the immediate context of 01 is 34 - inspiring (thus 01 - excessive yang but also inspirational) "CH'IEN: spirit power, creative and destructive; unceasing forward motion; dynamic, enduring, untiring; firm, stable; heaven, sovereign, father; also: dry up, parched, exhausted, cleared away.
