Her legal system is in absolute turmoil. Her religious structure - primarily Protestant Christian and Catholic - has atrophied to a point of ritualised institutionalism. As a result, America's ethical standards have been rationalised to a point far removed from that which inspired her founding fathers in 1776. America has become so rich in material goods and services that she has become self-indulgent and spoiled. Her military forces have become soft and complacent. Her educa- tional system is in chaos after several "en-lightened" changes to the priorities within the curicula of the nation. The banking system is in chaos because of both the un-bridled greed of the Sav ings and Loan institutions and that of the arms manufacturers (who have sold a lot in the Middle East). Her trade deficit is climbing as her work force becomes less competitive on overseas markets. America has become part of a revived spiritual Babylon. She is not physical Babylon; but represents what Babylon used to be in a material sense. Because America has let her own oil production de- preciate without proper maintenance or expansion, she has become too reliant on Middle East oil exporters e her economy is already a shambles, her leaders have favoured the easy way out - a continued dependence upon Middle East oil. To this end, America has committed to a calculated risk in the region in an attempt to secure her lifestyle. She has supported Israel in the region mainly to keep a physical foothold near the oil. The sending of troops to the region has made it clear to all concerned that America will not give up her major oil supplies. What is less clear to some is that America is dead and dying right now. One way or another, she will lose in any major military engagement in the region. Her troops are becoming more un-settled in the hostile desert environment. She is about to engage an enemy who excels in foul play and who has already acquired nuclear weapons capabilities from German corporations. She is surrounded by potentially-fickle Arab allies in the region. She cannot afford the cost to let the stand-off continue until February 1991. She cannot leave the area without remov addam Hussein; because he will only rape the region once America pulls out. America indicated she might allow herself to participate in a Middle East peace talk aimed at addressing the Palestinian issue - simply to placate her Arab allies of the moment. This would be - in essence - a step against Israel. America is doomed if she does nothing and doomed if she engages Iraq or supports the peace talks. She is committed to collapse either way. America has been in decline since the 1967 war in Israel. Th is decline will be finished entirely within 38 years of 1967 (2005 A.D.) - if our findings on the timing of Daniel are correct. B: Great Britain Great Britain (the Lion) will fall even farther than it already has. She will share much of the fate that America will. We feel that what remains after the next short war in the Middle East will be absorbed into the United States of Europe. Great Britain is also part of spiritual Babylon; and I think she has been in decline since the 1967 war in I srael. This decline will be finished entirely within 38 years of 1967 (2005 A.D.) - if our findings on the timing of Daniel are correct. C: The Soviet Union Russia has great internal conflicts at the moment. The southern Russian populations are Muslims - totalling some 34% of the entire Russian population. This lobby is pressing Moscow for better living standards; which means, in the final analysis, Russia will have to provide much more energy, food and housing for much cheaper than it has so far. Russia will need the nitrates of the Dead Sea for fertilisers to replenish her polluted and wind-stripped fields. She will need oil; as her own eastern resources have high paraffin contents which make the refining more expensive. She will also need vast fertile fields to augment her own production. She will be forced by her Muslim content to move down into Israel to "avoid the great war." Ezekiel 38-9 describes that the Prince of Rosh will be forced to come down into Israel; and, ....... 5/6 o f his army will die there. We do not believe this can happen until America is removed as a threat to Russia's invasion of Israel. D: The Western (Papal) Nations The "West" is primarily a grouping of catholic-controlled nations. Almost the entire catholic population of the world is distributed as follows: Europe 41%, North America 20%, South America 26%, (Asia, Australia and Oceania) 8%, Africa 3% and elsewhere 2%. E: The Arab Alliances Immediately after Russia has been remove eel there will still be a strong Arabic (Muslim) consortium remaining; and there will also be a fairly strong European or (U.S.E.) alliance under revived German (NAZI) control which will be gaining power as the Arabic group makes a move on Rome as the seat of what they see as the centre of all the infidels (Christians - specifically, "catholics"). Their attack may be by air and by sea (possibly the Adriatic). As they will still control most of the oil, they will be trying to dictate to the U.S.E raphrasing the Book of Revelation, "the beast will turn and devour the flesh of the whore that sitteth upon its back." The "whore" could be the catholic-controlled nations. This beast appears to be the new Arab alliance; and it will destroy the Western nations; but will, however, pay a high price for it. A peace treaty with Israel and the many surviving nations will have to be negotiated - perhaps by an Israeli representative to the new federation of the United States of Europe (Nimrod Novik?)......( who could be the "prince of the Covenant" as we discuss later in this series). The following comments are a few of our detailed findings & ideas on "The Possible Significance of Iraq in Current Events" in these times which we consider to be: "the times of the end of this Age.": I. INTRODUCTION to MIDDLE EAST EVENTS 1. Israel and Prophecy Recent events in the Middle East have the potential to clarify some prophetic puzzles which are of pressing concern to our generation. In Isaiah 44:7- Children of Israel are described as God's "timepiece." There were two main events scheduled to set this prophetical timepiece ticking for the countdown to the end of this Age. The formation of the state of Israel - which occurred on May 14th, 1948 - was the first event; and the second was the restoration of the Old City of Jerusalem to Israeli control - an event which was fulfilled on June 6th 1967. Throughout the Bible, there are prophecies which substitute one day for 1000 years (2 Peter 3:8). How ever, Hosea 5:15 to 6:3 speaks of Israel being revived after 2000 years and of the "Coming of the Lord" following immediately after. In the latter case, it is obvious that "2000 years" means "2000 years." May 14th, 1948 marked the major "budding" of Israel (also known as the "fig tree"; see: Joel 1:7, Jeremiah 24, etc.) after the long "winter" of the Dispersion that began in 70 AD. Jesus linked this "budding" (returning from exile) of the fig tree (Israel) with His Second Coming (Luke 21:29-31). Furthermore, the restoration of Jerusalem to Jewish control was to mark the close of the times of the Gentiles and would announce His Coming was at hand (Luke 21:24, 32 compared with Psalm 102:13, 16, 18.) Note 1: Psalm 102:18 literally = "last generation." Note 2: The landmarks of the "built-up Zion," [Psalm 102:16] are given by Jeremiah 31:38-40. They are now disappearing under the rapidly enlarging city.) 2. Other World Events With these events in place, other signs of Christ's return have appeared both in the form of political upheavals in Europe (Daniel 2:41-45) and in the emergence of China as a world power. Chairman Mao boasted in 1967 that his "Peoples' Army" comprised 200 million militia (see Revelation 9:16, 16:12). Some other pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that seem to have slipped into place are: a) the rise of Russia as a world power (see "Rosh" in Ezekiel 38,39), b) the Aswan dam in Egypt (Isaiah 19) and c) the new dams on the Euphrates; which hold the potential to dry the ri ver's lower reaches in drought (Rev 16:12). A related matter is the re-opening of the old Silk Route from Iran to China as a two-lane highway in the late 1970s (Revelation 16:12). However, let us focus on those Scriptures which may be relevant to the current situation with Iraq. On August 2nd, 1990 Iraq invaded Kuwait; subsequently, the Western Alliance deployed its troops to prevent both an attack on Saudi Arabia and the cutting-off of world crude oil supplies. II. IRAQ and ITS SCRIPTURAL BACKGROUND Daniel (8 and 11) deal, prophetically, with the territory which includes modern Iraq. when Daniel wrote these passages, they were virtually all prophecies of future events. Since then, some of those prophecies have become history. Let's examine both of these chapters in turn; and, then, other relevant Scriptures. 1. Daniel Chapter 8 In verses 15-27, the angel, Gabriel, gave Daniel the interpretation of his vision given in verses 1-14. One key statement is that the majority of w hat Daniel saw was, "...for the time of the end," (v.17) and for the, "latter days" (v.23) and for, "...the end of the Tribulation (or 'indignation' or 'Wrath of God' [In the Septuagint Bible, compare 1Thess 1:10, Rev 6:16,17, 11:18, 14:10,19, 15:1,7 16:1,19 and 19:15]." In these passages, "horns" are symbols of ruling powers. a) The Rise of the Grecian Empire To lead-up to that point, Gabriel starts in Daniel's own time and states (8: 20,21) the twin ruling powers of Medio-Persia (two horns) w ould be overwhelmed by a great Grecian king (v.7,8). Upon this ruler's demise, his kingdom would suffer a 4-fold division. We have absolutely no trouble identifying these events, historically. Alexander the Great overthrew the Medio-Persian Empire and established the rule of Greece from Egypt to the border of India circa 325 BC. b) The 4-fold Division of the Grecian Empire Upon Alexander's early death, his kingdom was divided among his four generals. Ptolemy took Egypt in the South; Cassander to ok Greece in the West; Lysimachus took part of what is now Turkey and some other provinces in Asia Minor. General Seleucus (later, Seleucus I Nicator) took the segment that stretched from Syria across to Persia - where he made his initial capitol of Seleucia in Iraq. After some intense rivalry, the Seleucid Kingdom in the North and the Ptolemaic Kingdom in the South dominated the Middle East - with control over Palestine see-sawing between them. c) The Seleucid Line of Rulers Daniel 8:9 reco rds another ruler (called, "the little horn") would emerge from one of the preceding four sub-divisions of Alexander's Kingdom. This ruler, "...[would become] exceeding great towards the South, towards the East and towards the Pleasant Land [Palestine]..." Historically, the Seleucid line thrust southwards and wrested control over Palestine from the Ptolemaic rulers whose dominion had shrunk to just Egypt, itself. The Seleucid Empire then occupied what is now Israel, Lebanon, Syria, part of Turkey and all of Iraq. The capitol of the Seleucid Empire eventually became Antioch - which derived its name from the son of Seleucus I, "Antiochus I," who was dubbed "Antiochus I Soter," ("Soter" meaning "saviour") by the Ionian city-states which he had delivered from the Gauls. d) Antiochus IV (Epiphanes) In Daniel's vision, the daily Temple sacrifices in Jerusalem would be caused to cease and the "Abomination (Transgression?) of Desolation" would be set up by the "little horn" (v. 11-14). Gabriel enlarged upon this "horn's" other deeds in verses 23-25. A number of Biblical exegetes attribute these verses to Antiochus IV (Epiphanes, meaning "god manifest") of the Seleucid line who sacrificed a sow on the altar in the Jerusalem Temple in 168 BC. He reigned from 175-164 BC; and the Temple was defiled from 15th Kislev in 170 BC to 25th Kislev (25 December) in 167 BC [see 1Maccabees 1:21, 54 and 5:52] for a total of only 1091 days. e) The Abomination of Desolation However, Daniel 8:14 sa ys that the "Desolation " was to last 2300 days, and Jesus also insisted that the "Abomination of Desolation" (Matthew 24:12-15) was yet future. If we take Jesus at His Word, the behaviour of Antiochus IV (Epiphanes) simply pre-figures an event that is yet future. Indeed, this contention is supported by Gabriel's comment that these events were scheduled for the end time in the last days of the Tribulation, or the Wrath of God, which is yet to come. This was re- emphasised by the Apostle Paul who specifically stated that the "Abomination of Desolation" occurs near the time of Christ's Return (2Thessalonians 2). There, Paul defined it more closely by saying that the personal Antichrist would set himself up in the newly - constructed Temple in Jerusalem and would cause himself to be worshipped as God. Antiochus never did this. Furthermore, a comparison of the new Testament references make it plain that Antichrist is empowered by Satan, himself (2Thessalonians 2:9; Revelation 12:9, 13:2, 16:13- 14, 19:20. 2. DANIEL CHAPTER 11 a) The Kings of the North and South The events in Chapter 8 are amplified in Chapter 11. Verses 1-4 reiterate the defeat of Media-Persia by Greece and the subsequent 4- fold division of Alexander's Empire. From that point the prophecy focuses on the succession of events brought about by the activities of the various kings (rulers) of the North and South. From these verses and from historical events we can be certain that the "King of the South" refers to Egyptia n rulers, while the "King of the North" refers to the Seleucid rulers. Prophecy has become history down to v. 20. b) King of the North & the "Abomination of Desolation" Verses 21-45 appear to have only one king in view. it is often claimed that Antiochus IV fulfilled verses 21-35, leaving "Antichrist" to fulfil verses 36-45. While we are willing to concede that these verses find a partial fulfilment in this particular "King of the North," we would contend that its main thrust is, yet, in the fut ure. Two considerations dictate this explicit interpretation. Firstly, verse 31 plainly states that this "King of the North" takes away the "Daily Sacrifice" and sets-up the "Abomination of Desolation" [Hebrew suggests it could be "that which makes desolate" .... a nuclear device?] in the Jerusalem Temple. We reiterate that history and Jesus' own exegesis of Daniel (see Mark 13:14) in 32 AD indicate this event was, at that time, yet a future event. This argues solidly against the premise that Antioc hus IV fulfilled verses 21-35. c) The "King of the North" and the "Prince of the Covenant" The second consideration is also important. Five times in verses 21-32 the "Covenant" is mentioned (verses 23, 28, 30 [twice] and 32). Further details in Daniel 9:27 reveal the Covenant to be a 7-year agreement between Israel and the "Prince who is yet to come" or the "Prince of the Covenant" (Daniel 11:22). This Covenant is broken by that "King of the North" after 3 and a half years; and the "Abomination of Desolation is set-up (9:27). Daniel 11:30 outlines that occurrence. With the one exception which we can see, at present, this makes the "Prince of the Covenant," the "Prince who is yet to come," the final "King of the North," and the "Antichrist" all one and the same person. The exception we see is an interpretation which differentiates between the "Prince who is yet to come" ("Antichrist" [Daniel 9:27]) and the "Prince of the Covenant (Daniel 11:22). The "Prince of the Covenant" then becomes the Israeli leader with whom the Covenant is made by the "King of the North." [Those of you who have read "The Vindicator Scrolls" will see the importance of both the Middle East peace treaty being negotiated by an Israeli politician named, Nimrod Novick, and the man, himself. In Israel he is a very influential man in Shimon Peres' opposition party. Nimrod has the ears of Kissinger, Baker, Schevardnarze and the UN; and has been put forward as the possible UN representative for Israel. He speaks f ive languages, fluently; has taken a doctorate from a prestigious US University; detests the Bible and all who believe in it as well as all other forms of "religion;" and has already authored two significant books on the establishment of "security" in the Middle East during the Reagan administration.] d) The Covenant and the Tribulation This Covenant appears to bring peace to the Middle East by settling the Arab/Israeli dispute and all other Middle East problems within its terms. The terms of the Covenant also appear to allow the Temple to be rebuilt in Jerusalem and the "daily sacrifices" to be re- commenced. The Covenant is for a 7-year term. When it is signed, the world will heave a collective "sigh of relief" and declare, "peace and safety, at last!" Here, the Tribulation begins (1Thess. 5:3,9) attended by its natural and supernatural disasters (Revelation 8,9,16). e)The King of the North and Russia Some identify the modern King of the North with Russia. This would appear to be in correct; since both Daniel 8 and 11 emphasise that the Ruler controls the "estate" (11:7, 20, 21) of the previous king; which would imply links to the Seleucid Empire. Many char- acteristics of that Ruler are listed in Daniel 8:11, 23-25. The territory occupied by the Seleucid Empire now comprises Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and part of Turkey. It would, therefore, appear that the modern King of the North could come from any one of these countries. However, some other Scriptural passages assist in a more pre cise identification of the land involved; and will be considered in the following section entitled "Other Scriptures." f) Conclusions from Daniel 8 and 11 We conclude that Daniel 11:21-45 comprise one of the key, relevant passages of Scripture relating to the Ruler who: * makes a 7-year Covenant to bring peace to the Middle East. * sets-up the "Abomination of Desolation" and * fulfils the role of the personal "Antichrist" in prophecy. That person is called the "King of the North;" as he rule s over the territory that was occupied by the Seleucid Empire in the 4-fold break-up of Alexander-the-Great's Kingdom. At the conclusion of those 7 years, the Messhiah returns in all His glory and sets-up His rule over the whole Earth from His headquarters in Jerusalem. The Messhiah will rule on Earth for the next 1000 years (the Millenium of Revelation 20:1-6); which will be a time of true peace, joy and prosperity with all creation restored to its original perfection (Romans 8:18-21). 3. Other Sc riptures a) The "Assyrian" The prophet, Micah, states when Messhiah comes to reign (5:4), He will conquer the "Antichrist" (the false messhiah); and will be "Israel's peace." Here, the Antichrist is described as "...the Assyrian (who) shall come into our land (Israel)" and as "...the Assyrian from the land of Nimrod" (5:5-6). Isaiah 10:5 confirms that the Assyrian will smite Israel with his power during the time of God's "indignation" or "wrath" (Isaiah 10:24-25). This theme is picked-up again in Isaiah 14:25-26 when the whole Earth has become involved. b) Antichrist: the "King of Babylon" Furthermore, that section of Isaiah also deals, prophetically, with Babylon and with the "day of the Lord" when the whole world will be punished for their evil in the wrath of God (13:1,6-11). Here, it is revealed that the king of Babylon (14:4) who rules over the nations of the whole Earth (14:6-7, 16) is at that time empowered by Satan (Lucifer) (14:12-17). This statement is similar to that in Re velation 13:1-7 where the Antichrist (beast) is given his power over all nations by Satan (dragon) and rules them for 42 months (or the last three and one-half years of Daniel 9:27). III. MODERN-DAY IRAQ 1. It has the ancient capitals of the Babylonian Empire (Babylon) and the Assyrian Empire (Asshur and Ninevah) under its control. It has ruins of what is claimed to be the Tower of Babel. Several million $US were given by the UN to restore Babylon as a tourist attraction. 2. Iraq's population of 1 7.4 million has a standing army of 56 divisions comprising 1.5 million men - now that reserves have been called-up (Time, 3/9/90 p.31) Indeed, Iraq has the 4th largest army in the world (Time, 10/9/90 p.26). The annexation of Kuwait adds 1.9 million to the population. 80,000 Palestinians in Jordan have also offered themselves to fight for Iraq (Time 27/8/90, p.27). Turkey's army is the next largest in the Middle East with 700,000 men - half of Iraq's size. <<< End File No. 1: dated 18 January 1991>>> File No. 2 of 4 3. Other military hardware possessed by Iraq includes 4300 heavy and 3000 light tanks (on a par with Syria; and more than Britain and France combined); 390 fighter bombers and 199 interceptors (Turkey next with 165 and 171, respectively). These aircraft are equipped with Exocet and other missiles. There are 160 armed helicopters and 68 missile launchers. Also, 7,100 armoured personnel carriers and infantry vehicles, 4000 artillery pieces and multiple rocket launchers (S yria 3200) and 60 ships (the same as Turkey), and a host of Soviet- built magnetic mines that are difficult to detect. (details from The Advertiser 9/8/90, p.7 and 10/8/90, p.13; Time 13/8/90, p.15; The Australian, 14/8/90, p.11; and Time 3/9/90, p.21). 4. It has the world's largest arsenal of chemical and biological weapons. Iraq has boasted that she can introduce typhoid, cholera and the plague into selected communities around the world (report from ABC Radio National). There are 4 chemical weapons factories, at least 4 nuclear facilities, 5 major air bases, 6 military bases, 3 major missile facilities (plus other mobile bases) and 9 oil refineries (Time, 20/8/90, p.25; 3/9/90, p.15). Iraq is on the verge of producing her own atomic weapons (Time, 20/8/90, p.18). 5. Iraq has been at war with Israel for 42 years. Although the other combatants in the Middle East have had armistice agreements with Israel, Iraq never has. Just recently, she threatened to incinerate Israel with her weaponry. 6. It has the world's 2nd largest reserves of oil - 20% of the total. Iraq's annexation of Kuwait adds an excellent supply of highly-prized light crude to their reserves. With this strangle-hold on oil supplies, it is possible to influence the world economy in a dramatic way. Already, there is talk of a world recession led by a Japanese economic collapse from high oil prices (Time 3/9/90, p.16, 21). To this is added 20,000 hostages that Iraq currently holds to "protect" vital installations against at tack from the Western Powers (Time, 3/9/90, p.14, 31). These facts indicate that Iraq exercises great power in the Middle East. It is also in a position to play a major part in the destiny of the region, while at the same time influencing affairs in other parts of the world. IV. NEW ALIGNMENTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST 1. Palestinians, The PLO and Arab Unity a) PLO acceptance of Saddam's leadership With the events of August 1990 which were precipitated by Iraqi action, some new and significant align ments have occurred in the Middle East. Iraq sees itself as the leader of both the Arab nations and the Palestinians. This has been given some force by the PLO acceptance of that claim. Yasser Arafat has done nothing to negate this; but supports President Saddam Hussein (Time, 3/9/90, p.33). Furthermore, the Palestinian population of the West Bank, of Israeli Gaza and most of the Jordanians have expressed solidarity with that claim even to the point of offering themselves to the Iraqi President for military service. b) Saddam or Uncle Sam? On the 18th of September 1990 at 7:15pm (Australian Central Time) in an interview conducted over the national, Australian, ABC Radio Network - during the "Background Briefing" program - three significant comments were made by an Arab who had first-hand knowledge of Saddam and disliked him intensely. One of these comments is especially relevant here. He said Arabs would generally support Saddam (even if they hated him) rather than the USA in the presen t situation; because the USA has always supported the Arabs' No.1 Enemy - Israel. They prefer Saddam because he would destroy Israel in opposition to the USA which backs Israel (at the moment, anyway....this may change soon). c) Restoration of Arab dignity and Glory The attitude is epitomised by one Jordanian's comment, "....Touch Iraq; and the whole Arab world will tear you to pieces!" (27/8/90, p.24). Importantly, Saddam has united Communists, Ba'ath Socialists and Islamic Fundamentalists int o a single front against the West (Time, 3/9/90, p.21). Amman's Assistant Anglican Archbishop, Elia Khoury, verified this popular attitude and went on to say that "...The big trouble with the Americans is that they don't propose sanctions against Israel - only against Iraq..." (Time, 27/8/90, p.24-25). The Arabs feel that in Saddam they have someone who can restore Arab dignity and the glory of the old Arab Empire. This feeling is so intense that even school-children are now singing a jingle which s ays, "Saddam, Saddam, we will give our blood for you" (the Adelaide Advertiser, 14/8/90, p.7). 2. Egypt Until these events, Egypt looked upon itself as the Arab leader. Now, however, many Arabs feel that Egypt is too closely aligned with the Western Powers to be trusted in this role. This rivalry holds the potential to induce military conflict between Iraq in the North and Egypt in the South, as per Daniel 11:21-45. The Libyan attitude in these verses is mentioned in item 5, following. 3. Jord an The position of Jordan is also of interest. This protectorate comprises the old kingdoms of Edom, Moab and Ammon. The present capitol of Amman reflects the tribal name. King Hussein is in an awkward position. He has had good relations with the Western Powers as well as with Iraq. In fact, Iraq's supply line during the Iran/Iraq war was through Jordan; which is now faced with the excruciating choice of going the way of Egypt and the Western Powers or following Iraq's lead and maintaining fav our with its own Palestinian population. Iraq also supplies 95% of Jordan's oil. When the Jordanian Crown Prince was questioned about possible alignments in the event a Middle East war broke-out, he replied that Jordan would assert its Arab destiny by siding with Iraq. Daniel 11:40-45 is significant here. At the time of the end, the King of the North sweeps through the Middle East capturing Israel , planting his command headquarters in Jerusalem and conquering Egypt. We are told, however, that only Edom, Moab and the chief of the children of Ammon avoid being over-run. The assertion by Crown Prince Hassan is one reason why that might happen. 4. Iran, Syria, China and USSR a) Iran The announcement that Iraq has agreed to accept the Algerian Treaty which ends its war with Iran is also of interest. It allows Iraqi troops to vacate their eastern border and to concentrate on the possible threats from the USA in Turkey and Saudi Arabia. However, it does more. With Iran's anti-Western stan ce, the possibility has been mooted that Iran could eventually side with Iraq, leaving Israel the abiding common enemy of both (the Australian, 18/8/90, p.14). Both Iraq and Iran have criticised Saudi Arabia for not being faithful caretakers of Islam's shrines; and both have promised military action over this issue. b) The Hezbollah Furthermore, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon may also support Iraq against the occupying Syrian forces. That is more than just a possibility; as a Hezbolla h leader in Beirut urged Muslims to launch suicide attacks against the Western forces in the Persian Gulf region (the Advertiser, 13/8/90, p.7). Indeed, Saddam told Gordon Thomas recently that, "Your hostages (in the Lebanon) will one day look to me for freedom" (Sunday Mail, 12/8/90, p.5). c) Syria and Lebanon Syria has supported the Egyptian Pan-Arab resolution. This places her in constant conflict with Iraq; and may be one reason why she and Lebanon do not escape the King of the North's wr ath in Daniel 11:40-45. Isaiah 17 may synchronise with these verses. Currently, Syria has at least 2000 troops stationed on her Iraqi border and others are deployed in Saudi Arabia. Israel must yet possess southern Lebanon up to the Zaharani River (Obadiah 20). On the ABC Radio, 21/10/90 at 7:45am, it was announced that the Lebanese President had gone to Damascus to discuss plans for a united Lebanon, now that the Christian forces had been defeated. Furthermore, a specific item was to discuss h ow to get the southern buffer zone away from Israeli domination. Any conflict on this issue may well result in an Israeli victory and subsequent annexation of southern Lebanon - particularly since Zechariah 10:10 says the Israelis will settle there "until there be no place left for them." d) China and Russia China and Russia have lined up against Iraq (Time, 20/8/90 p.21; 3/9/90 p.28). This is a significant development in the light of the prophetic Scriptures. Daniel 11:40-45 seem to give the r un-up imme- diately prior to Armageddon. The King of the North makes a sweep through the Middle East, conquering Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt & (perhaps) Turkey - his army being supported by Libya and Ethiopia. The passage under consideration goes on to state that the King of the North will plant his command headquarters in Jerusalem as tidings out of the East (Chinese mobilisation?) and the North (Russian mobilisation?) trouble him and he prepares for the final battle. The line-up of pro- and anti-Iraqi countries from the current situation is, thus, reproduced exactly, even to the two communist giants. If Israel enters the current conflict, the potential exists for Russia & Iran to intervene now, as described in Ezekiel 38; whereas, Ezekiel 39:2 deals with the later return of the remaining 1/6 of the Russian forces to Israel for Armegeddon as listed by Daniel 11:44. 5. Libya, Sudan and Ethiopia The Libyans whole-heartedly support Iraq. On Radio Australia at 2:30am (CST) on Wednesda y, October 17th, 1990, Libya claimed to have amassed one million troops to fight alongside Iraqi forces if Iraq is attacked. Furthermore, on the ABC Radio National for 22/10/90, Libya has invited an alliance between herself, Sudan and Ethiopia. This is significant; as Daniel 11:43 mentions that Libya and Ethiopia will be allied with the King of the North. The Scriptural Ethiopia includes the Sudan. The connection is also made in Ezekiel 38:5. 6. Kuwait and Iraq The destiny of Kuwait is uncertai n. Nevertheless, it is true, as Saddam has maintained, the territory of Kuwait was historically part of the ancient Babylonian, Assyrian and Seleucid Empires. If it comes to that, so was a segment of western Iran; which, presumably, is why the Saddam started the war with this neighbour. Interestingly enough, in that war, both East and West bloc Powers supported Iraq and built-up President Saddam Hussein to the position of power he now occupies (Time 3/9/90 p.25) One wonders about the relevance of th e statement in Zechariah 5:9-11 where two Gentile powers represented by women with the wings of a stork (an unclean bird) lifted-up the ephah (or world trade) and set up a base for it in the land of Shinar (Babel = Babylon = Iraq). The USA and EEC cooperated with Comicon in this venture and are indeed world trading powers. In summary, it may be said that the events of Aug/Sept 1990 are important in determining national alignments in the Middle East. They may have a profound Biblical significance not only in the Middle East; but also, the entire world. E. PRESIDENT SADDAM HUSSEIN: >>>> HIMSELF <<<<<: 1. Saddam's birth and humiliation He was born in Tikrit, 160 km north of Baghdad in 1937; and was orphaned at the age of nine months. Khairallah Talfah, an army officer who hated Britain's involvement with the Iraqi monarchy, raised Saddam as his nephew. Saddam Hussein later married his daughter, Sajida. This same officer was imprisoned as a result of an unsuccessful coup attempt when Sa ddam Hussein was only four. Saddam was nine before he attended school; and was later failed by the Baghdad Military Academy; because he was deemed to be unsuitable material. This humiliation, according to Israeli intelligence, made him "obsessed" with proving himself through military force (Time, 13/8/90 p.25). Interestingly enough, Daniel 11:38 lists the final King of the North as "...honouring the god of forces (fortresses, munitions, or strength..." 2. Law, Arab unity and Power Saddam stud ied Law in Cairo when he was 25 and became a protege of the late President of Egypt. It was from Nasser that Saddam obtained his ideas of Pan-Arab unity. It may be noted, Nasser formed the PLO with this aim in mind. In 1963 Saddam returned to Iraq and organised the militia for the Ba'ath Party which seized power in 1968 with General Al-Bakr as the nominal President. However, his relative, Saddam Hussein, was the real power behind the scenes. Upon Al-Bakr's retirement in 1979, Saddam became President , a close friend, for alleged treason. Similar bloodthirsty acts have been characteristic of his ruthless rule. 3. Saddam's Attitude to Life and Death From an ABC Radio National program 'Background Briefing' (18/9/90 at 7:15pm) we learned that an ex-Iraqi journalist living in Jordan said Saddam does not hold life dearly - not even his own. He would be prepared to shoot his own sons, if he felt they had been behaving treacherously; and, afterwards, he could sleep easily. Saddam also said all th ose present would have his permission to desecrate his grave if he was captured as a prisoner of war instead of being killed in battle. 4. Unusual characteristics a) Multiple personalities Throughout the Arab world he is known by his first name, Saddam, which means "One Who Confronts". This is quite interesting; because the Hebrew name for "Challenger""Confronter" is "Satan"; and Satan is due to in-dwell the human antichrist, personally midway through the Great Tribulation. He was surnamed Al-Takriti after his birthplace. Saddam later abolished such regional names (Advertiser 14/8/90 p.7). British, Israeli and US intelligence reports indicate, "...there are elements in his behaviour which suggest some kind of multiple personality". (Sunday Mail 12/8/90 p.5). b) Nebuchadnezzer, Bricks and Israel Furthermore, his favourite historical character is Nebuchadnezzer; and he had himself photographed in a replica of that despot's war chariot (Time 13/8/90 p.25). Nebuchadnezzer mar ked 1 brick in every 100 with his own insignia in the various construction projects around Babylon. Saddam Hussein has had 1 brick every 4 in the Babylonian Reconstruction marked with "Built in the time of Saddam" (The Australian 14/8/90 p.10). He wishes to be the one to liberate Palestine from Israeli control (ABC radio report August 13th, 1990). The same program revealed he claimed G*D told him to annexe Kuwait. c) The Lure of Babylon Intelligence analyst, Gordon Thomas, writes, in Baghdad, " ...it was an open secret that Saddam would suddenly leave his outlandish Presidential Palace and drive out to Babylon. For hours he would stand before the cradle of civilisation and say nothing. No one would dare approach. No one knew what went on in his mind. Then he would return to Baghdad and work another 12 to 14 hours..." (Sunday Mail 12/8/90 p.4-5). He has also spent several billion dollars on reconstructing the legendary hanging gardens of ancient Babylon, one of the seven wonders of the anci ent world (The Australian 14/8/90 p.10). Furthermore, the great 7-stepped ziggurat dedicated to Marduk (the deified version of Nimrod) is being reconstructed (Melbourne Age 1/10/87). This reference also mentioned Saddam has "ordered Babylon to be rebuilt" and has "provided an open cheque for the task." 5. Saddam and World Empires a) Saddam the Conqueror As mentioned in the foregoing, many Arabs see Saddam as someone who can restore Arab dignity and, importantly, the glory of the old Arab Empir e (see Time 27/8/90 p.24-25). This Empire stretched from Spain in the West across to Persia and replaced the Roman Empire in the control of Jerusalem. During its existence, the Dome of the Rock was built in Jerusalem in 691 AD; and the mighty Saladin pushed-out the Christian Crusaders in the 12th century. In his speech on Friday, August 10th, 1990, Saddam, "...clearly indicated he plans to re-establish Harun ar-Rashid's empire from Morocco to the borders of India... (he) ....believes his rule will b ecome as legendary as those of the most famous of the Mesopotamian kings and Islamic caliphs..." (The Australian 14/8/90 p.10). b) The Old Arab Empire - 7th in the Line In this context, the Arab Empire was the 7th to exercise sovereignty over the land of Israel. The empires, in sequence, were: Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Media-Persia, Greece, Rome and the Arab- Ottoman Empire. The Arab Empire began in 625 AD. By 800 AD, Harun ar-Rashid was at the height of his power. The Arab Empire merged into the Ottoman rulership about 1450 AD. In WWI, General Allenby dislodged Jerusalem from Ottoman control on the 11th of December, 1917. This paved the way for the modern era in the Middle East. c) The 8 Empires in the Book of the Revelation Now, pay attention to these facts.... Revelation 17:10-11 (which was written circa 90 AD during the Roman occupation of Jerusalem) states five (5) empires had fallen by that date, one (1) (Rome) was in existence at that time, and another (1) (the Arab Empire) had not yet appeared; however, when it does appear, it must stay for a time. And, as for the Beast that once was; but is no more, he, himself, is the eighth king (or kingdom); but he belongs to the seven; and goes into perdition." As to the king of that 8th Kingdom who rules the world for three and a half years, it is stated in 2Thessalonians 2:4 that he will then sit in the Temple of G*D in Jerusalem "to prove to himself that he is G*D." The Australian of 14/8/90 (p.10) had a rather perceptive comment: "No evidence has yet emerged that the President of Iraq, Mr. Saddam Hussein, has come to believe himself to be the incarnation of divinity; but he seems to be rapid progress in that direction." F. THE RISE of the LAST KING of the NORTH 1. Back to Daniel's prophecies Again... Is this the one of whom the Scriptures prophesied? Perhaps! In any case, the verses in Daniel 11:21-22 coincide with Saddam's career so far. If we run several translations of these verses together to gain the full impact of the passage, it reads: "...And in his estate will stand a vile, contemptible and despised person, who has been set at nought; and does not have the honour of royalty; but he will come peaceably, in a time of prosperity and security and will obtain the kingdom by intrigue and deceitful ways; and with a flood of arms they will be overflown from before him and will be broken - the Prince of the Covenant...." 2. Saddam and Scripture Britain's former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, told her ai des that she was determined "to bring that repulsive filth of a man down" (Time 3/9/90 p.29). It would seem that the scriptural label of "vile" and "contemptible" applies to Saddam. This passage also hints at his military academy humiliation (set at nought), and at his lack of royal blood. the intrigue and deceitful ways may indicate the initial coup which brought him into the Iraqi power structure; while his subsequent assumption of the Presidency upon his predecessor's retirement are suggested by the terms, "time of peace, prosperity and security." 3. Overwhelming Quantities of Arms As for the remainder of the quotation, a consistent translation (Concordant Version) reads, in part, ".. and the arms of the overwhelmer will be overwhelmed from before him..." Unprecedented quantities of arms are there now. This passage was difficult to interpret. Several items are crucial. It is possible to imply the King of the North has overwhelmed something by force of arms (the intial coup, or Kuwait? ); and is then, himself, overwhelmed by a huge military action. On the other hand, the Amplified Bible suggests the King of the North is victorious against all the overwhelming forces ranged against him. The interpretations also hang on whether the King of the North and the Prince of the Covenant are one and the same person. As already mentioned, it is possible, the Prince of the Covenant MAY be the Israeli ruler with whom the Covenant is made. <<< End File Number 2: dated 18 January 19 91>>> File No. 3 of 4 4. Israeli and USSR Involvement? a) Israel This could indicate Israeli involvement in the conflict. According to Scripture, Israel must yet obtain the EAST Bank of the Jordan (in the territory currently held by Jordan), and southern Lebanon (up to the Zaharani River) and settle there (Obadiah 19, 20; Zechariah 10:10- 11:3). If Jordan actively sides with Iraq in any conflict; or allows Iraqi troops onto her soil, Israel has made it clear she would feel obliged to attack both countries to protect her borders (Advertiser 11/8/90 p.6). It is also possible Syria may become involved as outlined in Isaiah 17. Another scenario is the Palestinian linking of the Feast of Tabernacles' \riot on the Temple Mount (October 1990) with the Iraqi crisis. This holds the potential to bring Israel into the conflict; and certainly links her with Iraqi and Palestinian demands for the region. b) A United Arab Force? Several regional leaders have stated, if Israel enters any conflict agai nst Iraq, it will unite ALL Arab states against their common enemy, Israel; and will secure Iraq and Saddam as leader of the Arab world (Time 20/8/90 p.27; 3/9/90 p.21, 32-33). The possibility then exists for Ezekiel 38 to be fulfilled. In verse 13 of that chapter, an interesting alignment occurs which may be pertinent to the current situation. Saudi Arabi (Sheba and Dedan) seem allied with "the merchants of Tarshish, and all the young lions thereof." Many consider this latter group to be the Anglo-A merican alliance. ABC Radio National (7:15am) and BBC World Roundup (7:30am) on the 17/9/90 announced the following: Saudi Arabia has resumed diplomatic ties with the USSR which were broken in 1938. The treaty was signed by the Saudi Foreign Minister in Moscow and sought the cooperation of the Soviets in the Middle East. This may be one explanation of the Saudi attitude in Ezekiel 38 when the USSR comes against Israel. c) The USSR Enters In the war of Ezekiel 38, which may or may not be related to the current Middle East situation, Russia and her allies will come against Israel. Ezekiel 38:4 probably indicates Russia had different ideas about involvement; but a change of circumstance seems to force them back down onto the hills of Israel. As the Scriptures state, "I will turn you back (from your original intention), and put hooks in your jaws (will forcefully change your mind), and bring you forth with all your army (onto the hills of Israel)." That ties-in with the current USSR approach. Even though there may be as many as 1000 Soviet advisers still in Iraq, the USSR currently favours the UN resolutions against Iraq (Time 10/9/90 p.18, 23). Nevertheless, despite a strong displeasure at Iraq's adventurism, the USSR has made it plain, they "do not approve" of the USA decision to send its expeditionary force to the region (Time 10/9/90, p.18). Therefore, the active participation of Israel could provide a trigger to swing the Soviet allies behind the Arab cause. An added enhancement would be the presence of Western allies just 600 miles from the USSR border. If the current situation is the one alluded to in Ezekiel 38, then another possibility which may explain the Russian move on Israel could be the following scenario: Russia is hesitant in its present state of internal strife to provoke the USA in any way which might either cut-off US aid to the USSR or initiate a shooting war with the USA. Therefore, we reason, if the USSR is to make a move on Israel right under th of the US troops in the region, one of three events has taken place. Either the US will have agreed to abandon Israel to her enemies; or the US will not have its troops in the area; or both of the foregoing will have occurred. Perhaps the US troops will be so greatly damaged in the encounter with Iraq as Iraq conquers Saudi Arabia, the USSR will not feel threatened at the prospect of attacking Israel. Furthermore, food, energy shortages at home and pressures from Saddam and the rest of his (by that time, zealous) supporters throughout the Middle East and southern Russia will cause the Soviet troops to turn back from going home; to turn and support the Arab block by taking out Israel and plundering it in payment for doing the job for the Arabs. It might also be the USA will be so hampered by both its democratic processes and its current banking crisis, it will be forced to abandon the Middle East. In this event, the Russians could be enticed into an extraordinary move on Israel while the US lo s on and makes but weak protests about the invasion. Alternately, a peace treaty between Israel, the US and the Arab alliance could be negotiated with great speed in the next six months. This would require the US to abandon the region as well; and it would bankrupt the US; because there would be no booty to pay for its military action in the area. Furthermore, as Russia has to invade Israel sometime (according to Ezekiel), it may be that Russia will be in the area just after the treaty is signed and the US has gone home. In this case, Russia could be forced into taking Israel by its Arab partners (which include Saddam). Certainly, the US is not going to be a major player in the Mid-East for long. d) The German Re-Unification With the re-unification of Germany in October 1990, Ezekiel 38:6 assumes some importance. Currently, this New Germany looks as if she is leaning towards neutrality - although taking a strong pro- Western stance. This does not seem to last according to Scripture. Gomer in Ezekiel 38:6 is generally acknowledged as being Germany. Gomer comes with the USSR-aligned nations against Israel. The verse reads "Gomer, and ALL its troops...." Up until now, it has not been possible for a divided Germany to send troops from both sectors to any USSR-supported action. But, that has just become possible - provided Germany is prepared to act independently of NATO and side with the Soviets as occasion serves them. Even the word, "ALL" is Scripturally significant in this scenario. G . Recent Manoeuverings in the Middle East 1. The Pentagon's Original 4-Point Plan On the Philip Satchel Show (ABC Adelaide), during the 2nd week in August 1990, the strategic military adviser to Bush indicated a 4- point plan was in operation (detailed as plan 1002 in the Pentagon, Advertiser 23/8/90). Point 1 - Stop Saddam entering Saudi Arabia. Point 2 - Win back Kuwait. Point 3 - Destroy the Iraqi army on the ground; and, Point 4 - Kill Saddam Hussein, himself. These four points were re-emphasised in Time Magazine (Time 20/8/90 p. 17-18; 3/9/90 pp 15-16, 21, 25, 30). They were also the view of US Defence Secretary, Dick Cheney and Israel (Time 10/9/90 p.17). However, it now seems the opposing camp, led by US National Security Adviser, Brent Snowcroft, has won out (Time 10/9/90 p17). This camp wishes to maintain the status quo ante, with a UN multinational force in Kuwait to act as a trip-wire against further Iraqi adventurism. In any ca se, it was a consensus of all, war would be avoided until after late November 1990; when moderate temperatures would allow US troops their greatest mobility. Scheduled armour transportation had also been slower than expected. The US Secretary of State, James Baker, refused to give a commitment that the US would seek Congressional approval before the rumored attack in late November. As we now (20 Dec 1990) know, the attack is probably to be after the 15th of January 1991 - if not made unexpectedly by Saddam before that time. We are reminded of the Christian soldiers of the 2nd Crusade in the late 12th century who were defeated by Saladin (perhaps, the most famous Muslim leader of all time .... so far). The Crusaders had come to the area with their well-armoured knights atop strong steeds from the European continent. They had built make-shift castles and had attacked the Arabs in the same manner for a number of years; until Saladin realised the one great weakness of the Crusaders. He determi ned they could not go long without water; because their suits of armour were too hot and their horses needed frequent water because of their heavy loads. Saladin's strategy was to draw the Crusaders into a battleground which did not have adequate freshwater supplies; and which would allow the Arabs to stall for time. This they did by drawing the Crusaders after them in pursuit to Tiberias in northern Palestine where the Crusaders found themselves surrounded by Arabs, hot, thirsty and ..... defe ated when they finally had to remove their armour or collapse in the heat. Saladin went on to capture Jerusalem from the hands of "the infidels." If Saddam has identified with Saladin (whose full name means, "Righteous of the Faith, son of Job"), then Saddam may think it fortuitous that Saladin was born at Takrit - the modern site of Tikrit (north of Babylon) where Saddam, himself, was born. Saddam may have seen other synchronicities between Saladin's life and his own; such as Saladin's ineptitu de for military matters in early life; and, such as Saladin's ordering of the assassination of Shawar, the powerful vizier of the Egypt ian Fatimid caliph, to enable Saladin to rise to the rank of both the commander of the Syrian troops and the vizier of Egypt. Furthermore, Saddam may have remembered that Saladin united the Arab states of Egypt, Palestine, Syria and northern Mesopotamia. Saddam may have even seen the alliterative links between his own name, "Saddam," and that of "Saladin." The fact that Saladin used the heat and other harsh weapons of his home terrain to defeat the Crusaders may also inspire Saddam to stall the US forces until the weather and other natural phenomena in the region are to his favour in battle. It is worthy of further note that the Crusaders packed for home after their 3rd Crusade to his region - primarily because they could not levy enough taxes from home to continue paying the excessively high costs of these crusades - so far from home.... Sounds a familiar tune; does it not?..... Look out Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and part of Iran; Saladin's back...... 2. What Would Happen if Saddam Were "Removed?" There are some valid reasons behind Points (3) and (4) just mentioned in the US plan for the current situation. These items appear to have been temporarily discarded. Point (4) seemed desireable as the quickest, simplest way of overcoming the immediate difficulty with the least number of lives being lost. Furthermore, even if Iraq were NOT victorio us in the threatened action at present, Saddam, "... would remain an intimidating presence in the Arab world.... (who) .... no one would dare disobey" (Advertiser 9/8/90 p.7). However, one problem persisted. It was admitted by US Intelligence officials that, "...There are people waiting in the wings (in Iraq) who make Saddam look like an eagle scout by comparison...." (Time 3/9/90 p.25; Time 27/8/90 p.16). 3. Should Iraq be Taught a Lesson? Accordingly, the reasoning went that the whole country of Iraq, "..must suffer a defeat; so that whoever comes AFTER Saddam will inherit a powerful lesson" (Time 3/9/90 p.25). This was the rationale behind Point (3). It was further strengthened by an added explanation. Failure to do both of these things NOW would leave open the possibility of any subsequent Iraqi leadership repeating the performance in the near future. However, this next time would see Iraq equipped with its own nuclear weapons and able to hold the entire world to ransom (Time 3/9/90 p. 21). To obviate this scenario, the UN multinational force in Kuwait and elsewhere has been proposed. It is quite hoped, this deterrant plus the blockade will empasise to Iraq that further adventurism would not pay. It would seem, some peace agreement may be explored by UN contacts between the relevant parties. Scripturally, however, a major conflict seems to be implied before this agreement (covenant) is made. H. "Strong with a Small People": 1. The Palestinians Again As for the future, Daniel 11:23 really does indicate an agreement is to be signed with the King of the North after the military activity of verse 22. The Bible says that "After a pact made with him, he works deceitfully and becomes strong with a small people..." It is possible this pact is something different from the 7-year Covenant; but it need not be. Regardless, part of his power base from then onwards is this, "small people." These people are likely to be the "Palestinians" in Israel, Jordan and the Lebanon. To them, ". .. Saddam fulfills the ambitions of the Arab people.... He is a hero" (Time 20/8/90 p.30). Saddam has publically supported the PLO (Time 27/8/90 p25). 2. A Palestinian Presence - Worldwide Indeed, these people have offered themselves to Saddam Hussein for warfare; and now look to him for leadership. This would give the man a terrorist force, not only in the Middle East; but also, in many countries around the world. Significantly, on Radio Australia at 1600 hours GMT on August 31st, 1990, the Ira qi Foreign Minister, Tariq Aziz, made an announcement. He said that if the blockading nations (including Australia) continued to employ such imperialist methodsa against Iraq, then Iraq would use terrorist tactics to retaliate against them. This included the use of powders that spread anthrax and botulism. The Palestinians and Iraqis in countries around the world would be utilised to this end, he claimed. Iraq already has close ties with terrorists groups which could now, "...put US citizens at risk everywhere" (Time 20/8/90 p.18). In addition, if Saddam also wins- out against the military odds stacked against him, he would indeed be a person that, "...all the world wonders after..." (Revelation 13:3). 3. The Arabs' "Robin Hood" Daniel 11:23-24 states, the King of the North will, "...become strong with a small people; ...and shall distribute among them the plunder, the spoil, the goods and the riches." Interestingly, Saddam is often portrayed as the Arabs' "Robin Hood." He is seen as the ch ampion of the Arab world's poor in the righteous battle to overthrow the corrupt Arab monarchies - those who promote Arab disunity and were, for the most part, set-up by the West). "He is just, simply, the man who is coming and taking money from the wealthy Arabs. and he promises the poor Arabs a place in the sun," said sociologist, Bader Din Ali (Advertiser 10/8/90 p.7). Similar sentiments abound in the Arab world (Time 20/8/90 p.27). I. Wars and the 7-Year Covenant 1. Lies and Hypocritical Conduct ... Curiously, it has been pointed out that Saddam has lied to Kuwait by stressing it had no designs upon it; and has lied to Egypt, by assuring her that she would not attack Kuwait (Time 10/990 p.30). Saddam's word with regard to the Western hostages has been less than reliable until lately (Time 3/9/90 p.13). Daniel 11:21 talks about the King of the North's "cunning hypocritical conduct (Amplified version). Daniel 11:23 says that after the pact made with him, he "shall work deceitfully." Verse 27 tells us he will "speak lies at the table (presumably, the negotiaiting table)." Saddam certainly fits this personality profile already. 2. Iraq Against Egypt Again... This negotiating session seems to come after the 7-year Covenant is made. The necessity for negotiation arise because the King of the North comes with a large army against the Egyptian Alliance (daniel 11:25-26). The Alliance does not win the battle. The Septuagint Bible seems more consistent than some other texts at this poin t. It reads, "And the King of the South (Egypt) shall engage in war with a great and very strong force; but his plans will not stand; for they shall devise plans against him; and they shall crush him; and shall carry away his armies as with a flood; and many shall fall down slain." 3. War and The Abomination of Desolation... The Abomination of Desolation is set-up in the Temple; because of another military encounter listed in Daniel 11:29-30. In this case, ships from Cyprus come against Antichri st and, "...he (the King of the North) shall be brought low; and shall return (home); and shall be incensed against the Covenant..." (Septuagint or LXX). The Scriptures then affirm, "Arms shall stand on his part; and they (the army of the King of the North) will pollute the sanctuary of strength; ... and will place the Abomination that makes Desolate..." (verse 31). Verses 32-39 deal with the problems of the last three and a half years of the Tribulation period. Toward the close of this period, the Egyptian ruler initiates further action against Antichrist (Daniel 11:40) which becomes the prelude to the battle of Armageddon. Egypt is then conquered, which ties in with Isaiah 19:4 where "the cruel lord" is the Antichrist. 4. Fatally Wounded but Still Alive At that point in this sequence of events, the Antichrist appears to receive a wound to the head which would normally prove fatal; but, miraculously, does not die (Rev.13:3, 12, 14 ; 17:8). We do not understand much more of the timing deta il of this event at present; but we are trying to seek out more info on it. We feel it is certain that it occurs before the last three and a half years of the Great Tribulation. The latest possible time is immediately after the Cyprus ships incident. If that is the case, it explains why, after seeming to be defeated, the passage says, "arms will stand on his part." Revelation gives the general response to this extraordinary development as, "...all the world wondered after the beast; .... and t hey worshipped the beast and said, 'who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?'" (Revelation 13:3-4). In the present situation, we may state that if Saddam lives after some assassination attempt which would normally prove fatal, we may be sure he is the one of these scriptures are speaking. However, it is of interest to note even if he is killed, that in Iraq there are others (considered to be even worse than Saddam) who could take his place (Time 3/9/90 p.25). 5. War and the 10-Nat ion Confederacy a) World Trade and the World Leader It seems to be after his wounding that the 10-Nation Confederation "receive power as kings for one hour with the beast" (the last three and a half years - Revelation 17:12-13). The Confederacy seems to monopolise world trade during this time according to Revelation 18:10-19. It is apparent this "great city Babylon, that mighty city" (verse 10) is the trade control centre for the whole world (could include the USE and Great Britain). This Confed eracy is mentioned in Daniel 2:40-45 and in Daniel 7:7. Comparison with Daniel 8 and 11 reveals the same world leader is in view in these Danile 7 references - namely, the "last King of the North;" who is also called the Anitchrist. b) Two Cities We have an area here which we cannot fully explain - at present. The Revelation references leave the impression that at least part of the old Roman Empire is involved; and certainly Rome (as it was the city built on the 7 hills [Revelation 17:9, 18]). Nevertheless, Zechariah 5:6-11 implies world trade may become centred in the "land of Shinar" where ancient Babylon stood. This agrees with Daniel 8 and 11 and the Revelation references to Babylon. Furthermore, there are a number of prophecies about Babylon in Isaiah and Jeremiah which have not yet been fulfilled. This suggests a more complete reconstruction of that city may occur shortly. Nevertheless, it is certainly true that Iraq and ancient Babylon were both within the boundaries of the old Roman Empire. c) Two Confederacies Our difficulty arises because there are currently TWO confederacies: the European Common Market and the Arab League. The split in the Arab League has now left 9 members with Iraq (Time 22/10/90 p.18). One can visualize a scenario with the ECM (after 1992, possibly, the USE) centred in Rome and the neo-Arab League in Babylon (or at least in Iraq). The first controls world trade through commodities; but the second controls the world economy through oil. It is n ot inconceivable that there may be some re-alignment in both Europe and the Mid-East due to some of the warfare which is indicated in the above Biblical references. Indeed, with a world shortage of oil due to the Mid-East problems, it is also possible the Euro-Market (USE?) may take on Iraq as a member to ensure oil supplies. The Iraqi leader may then achieve world power. Remember, the 10-nation Confederacy is only in its final form and ruled by the Antichrist in the last three and a half years of th e Tribulation. d) The point of this discussion is a warning. It is possible, considering Daniel 7:8, 20, that the fall of Kuwait may be the first of three kingdoms which are to be "plucked up by the roots" by this antichrist. Daniel 8:9 points out that this ruler grew great "towards the South" (Kuwait and/or Saudi Arabia ?), "towards the East "(perhaps, part of Iran ?) and "towards the Glorious Land (westward toward Israel - perhaps via Syria). It would seem, then, some significant changes to inter national alignments are in the offing due to warfare - of which the Iraqi/Kuwait episode may only be the beginning. J. Towards the 7-Year Covenant: 1. Antichrist's Character With all this military activity, one wonders what makes the Antichrist tick. The Bible gives several descriptions of this King of the North. It, thus, seems appropriate to detail the main references here; so that a comparison may be made between Saddam and the Antichrist of the Scriptures by you, the reader. < << End File Number 3: dated 18 January 1991>>> File No.4 of 4 a) His Behaviour Toward the End The prime New Testament reference deals with Antichrist and his setting himself up to be G*D in the Temple in Jerusalem. IOt can be found in 2Thessalonians 2:3-10. There, he is described as the "the man of sin," "the lawless one" and the "son of perdition." In the last 3.5 years of the Tribulation, he eventually "exalts himself above all that is called G*D" and finally works "signs and lying wonders after the power of Satan." This description certainly does not mince matters but paints this person as a Satanic masterpiece. Remember, this is how the person concerned finally behaves. This final aspect of his character does not seem to be revealed in all its fullness at the beginning of his career. Even so, the description in Revelation 13:4-10 agrees with this assessment. The commentary in Daniel 8:9-12 confirms that this is how he will end up. It points out that when he has "grown great" he will mag nify himself against the Lord of Heaven and trample underfoot those who trust in the Almighty (El Shaddai). Indeed, he "cast truth and righteousness down to the ground and prospered." Daniel 7:8, 11, 21, 24-25 gives additional detail reinforcing these traits. There we are told he, "speaks great words against the Most High" and "made war with the saints and prevailed against them." However, these events will occur at the end of his career. b) The Angel Gabriel's Description The full overview of these characteristics of Antichrist is given by the angel, Gabriel, in Daniel 8:23-25. It is worth running several translations together to develop a complete, descriptive sweep of this "King of the North." "A king or ruler will stand up with bold features and fierce countenance. He understands dark trickery, sinister schemes and craftiness. His power will eventually become great and mighty; but it will not be his own power (as it emanates from Satan, the Prince of the Darkness). And he shall corrupt astonishingly and destroy wonderfully; he shall prosper, practice, thrive and do his own pleasure. He will destroy mighty men - as well as the holy people. And through his cunning policy, he will cause trickery and deceit to prosper; and there is craftiness in his hand. And he will magnify himself in his heart and mind. In their prosperity and false security he will corrupt and destroy many with his craftiness. And he will stand up for the destruction of many; and shall crush them as eggs in his ha nd. He shall even rise against the Prince of princes; but then shall be broken without (human) hand." This description does have certain elements in common with characteristics that Saddam Hussein, the president of Iraq, has displayed in recent times. 2. A Step in the Right Direction In any case, Saddam is well worth watching for two final reasons. Whether or not the "King of the North" is the "Prince of the Covenant," a 7-year Peace Pact seems to emanate from the "King of the North." Sadda m has already made an interesting step in this direction. On August 13th, 1990, he suggested all UN resolutions for the Mid-East be observed. Given that basis, his proposal envisaged his withdrawal from Kuwait; simultaneously to Israel withdrawing from the West Bank and Gaza and Syria wihdrawing from the Lebanon (The Australian 14/8/90 p.10; see also Time 27/8/90 p.20; 3/9/90 p.15 and the Adelaide Advertiser 14/8/90 p.7). 3. The Temple and Jerusalem This simultaneous solution bears the character of the 7-year Covenant. france has accepted Saddam's proposal as a way out of the whole Mid-East muddle (Advertiser 3/10/90 p.7). Others are also showing interest. The Soviets have proposed a Mid-East conference to solve all related problems in the region at once in line with Saddam's initial peace offer (Time 17/9/90 p.12). The Australian Foreign Minister, Gareth Evans agreed that the present crisis may be the springboard to settle a range of problems in the region (ABC Radio National 7:15 A M 17/9/90). At the same time, President Bush and his aides have been talking about a "New World Order" and a "World Coalition" arising out of the crisis in the Mid-East (Time 17/9/90 p.12-15). The one additional ingredient needed to bring this simultaneous solution in line with Scripture is permission for Israel to rebuild their Temple. To that end, it should be noted the site of Solomon's and Zerubbabel's Temple on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem has been determined to within 10 centimetres. It lie s 90 metres to the North of the Dome of the Rock in an area that is relatively clear of all structures (The Vineyard October 1984 p.4). The Temple Mount and the status of Jerusalem has just become linked with the Iraq crisis as a result of the death of 19 Palestinians and the injury of another 140 during the Feast of Tabernacles riot by Moslems on the Mount (Time 22/10/90 p.14 called this riot, "Saddam's Lucky Break"). On BBC World Roundup (15/10/90 at 7:30am) the British Foreign Secretary, Doug las Hurd, while visiting Egypt, commented on the riots and supported the UN resolution against Israel. He said, "No one in the world recognises Israel's claim to sovereignty over East Jerusalem." It is possible the internationalisation of Jerusalem may also be a part of the Covenant (Revelation 11). In any case, the focus will be on Jerusalem (Zion) increasingly. When Messhiam returns at the Battle of Armegeddon, Isaiah 34:8 calls it "the year of recompence for the controversy about Zion." 4. Sadda m and the End of Babylon the Great The second reason may be important also. In Background Briefing (18/9/90 op. cit.) the ex-Iraqi journalist now living in Jordan made the following comment. He said if Saddam thought Iraq was lost, he would have no hesitation in implementing a sinister scheme which would involve setting-off explosive charges at the bottom of all their oil wells simultaneously. Saddam was reported as saying the result would be worse than any Hiroshima bomb - the whole of Asia woul d shake and Iraq would be turned into a burning hell. The words of Revelation 18 now may, possibly, take on new significance; consider: "Babylon the great is fallen, ...and she will be utterly burned with fire, ...they see the smoke of her burning, ....saying, 'Alas, alas, that great city, Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgement has come, .... For in one hour such great riches came to nothing, ...and as many as trade by sea, stood at a distance and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, ...for in one hour she is made desolate' ...And her smoke rises up forever!" (Revelation 18:2, 8-10, 17-19, 19:3). It is even less difficult to believe Saddam would do this when one considers the following news from the Reuters newsdesk in Amman (30 December 1990) The article entitled, "Iraq Said to be Preparing 'Wall of Fire' in Kuwait," stated Saddam has constructed deep trenches around Kuwait's gulf coastline and along its Saudi border. These trenches are 5 metres wide by 5 metres deep and are connected by a pipeline (complete with valves) to the Ahmadi oil refinery about 30 kilometres from Kuwait. Saddam intends to fill this trench with oil and set fire to it in case of war. K. The Ultimate Way Out: 1. The Tragedy of the Great Tribulation Given that the Scriptures indicate disasterous events lie ahead, then even if Saddam Hussein is not the Antichrist, it is appropriate to mention that the genuine Christian is destined to miss out on the calamities to come in the Tribulation period. a) One Reason for the Tribulation The Tribulation is permitted because G*D has established a just system of order within HIS Creation. It is a system which requires every action and thought to reap what it has sown. Evil or sin - whether it be personal, national, global or heavenly - must reap destruction; because it sows destruction or chaos in G*D's Order. In the issue under discussion, Antichrist is personally empowered by Satan; and no one will be able to buy or sell or get a job in those last 3.5 years of this Tribulation period unless they get his mark of authorisation on them (Revelation 13:18). To get that mark, a person must bow down and worship this man as a god. This is the same as worshipping Satan (the Devil); and everyone who takes this course of action will be punished severely. There will be no way that the individual can take this number and still find a place in G*D's Kingdom of eternal life; because by taking that number - even under duress - the individual becomes a consuming and producing part of the whole system; and, as such, is liable for all the crimes or sins which the whole system does. The situation could be compared to those Nazis during WWII who later claimed they were just doing their job; that they did not, personally, do anything wrong - even though they knew wrong- doing was happening within their system. In hindsight, we can look at them; and say why didn't you speak out or resign? We would feel they were gui lty by complacence if nothing else. b) Any Survivors? The Bible says much about the 7-year Tribulation Period. Jesus mentioned it several times; and a major part of Revelation details the events of that period. Jesus' comment in Matthew 24:21-22 indicates the tragedy of the last 3.5 years of that period: "For then shall be great tribulation; such as was not since the beginning of the world to this same time; no, nor ever shall be. And except those days be shortened, no flesh would survive; b ut for the sake of the faithful, that period will be shortened." 2. The Promise of Escape to Safety a) There is a way out of this coming tribulation period However, in reiterating the problems of this time, Jesus made an important comment to His diciples in Luke 21:35-36: "For as a snare shall it (the Tribulation) come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole Earth. But, watch you, therefore; and pray always that you may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to p ass upon the whole Earth; and to stand before the Son of Man" (Jesus - the Christ in His risen and glorified body). b) The Tribulation Can Be Avoided In addressing one of the Churches (one of the assemblies of people claiming to be adherents to His teaching) which would exist in the end times, Jesus made a very significant comment: "Because you have kept the word of my patience, I will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the world to test those that dwell upon the Earth." N ote that Jesus did not say He would keep those who trusted Him in the hour (en tes horas); but, rather out, away from the hour (ek tes horas). Again, the escape clause is mentioned. What did Jesus mean? c) Resuurection From the Dead Daniel 12:1-2 also mentions something unusual occurring at the time of the Tribulation: "...and there shall be a time of trouble such as never was since there was a nation even unto that same time (the Tribulation). But, at that time, everyone that is found in the Bo ok shall be delivered. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the Earth shall awake to everlasting life..." Another clue was given by the Apostle, John. When Jesus stood at the tomb of Lazarus with the weeping Mary and Martha (John 11:25- 26) He said: "I am the Resurrection and the Life; he that believes in me though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever is living and believing in me at the last day shall never die." ....Do you believe this.....? d) Some Christians Will Never Die! The puzzle is explained in two passages by the Apostle, Paul in (1Corithians 15:51-53 and 1Thessalonians 4:16-17) both of which we run together in the following: "Behold, I show you a great mystery - we shall not all die; but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye. For the Lord. Himself, will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and the trumpet of G*D; and the dead in Christ will rise first; then, we which are alive and remain shall be cau ght up together in clouds with them to a meet the Lord in the air. For this mortal body shall have put on immortality; and the dead will be given an incorruptible body. So shall we ever be with the Lord. Therefore, comfort one another with these words." e) The Perfect Way Out Yes! That is THE WAY of ESCAPE for those who trust in Christ Jeus. Just before Heaven declares war on planet earth in the Tribulation, the Lord withdraws His ambassadors; and we come into His Presence in Heaven. Seven year s later we return with Him at the Battle of Armageddon; conquer the Antichrist; and set up Heaven's rule on Earth. This will fulfill all our prayers which have included the declaration," Thy Kingdom Come; Thy Will Be Done!" Amen! f) What About Those Who Are Left Behind? For those left behind who turn to the Lord during the Tribulation, the Bible exhorts them to "remain faithful unto death;" and assures them that their "works live after them" (Revelation 14:13). However, it is important that they not take the "mark of the beast" on them (revelation 14:9-11). The Antichrist will fight against them; and many will be beheaded. But they are assured they will be resurrected at the close of the Armageddon Campaign; and will live and reign Christ (Revelation 20:4). g) Are You Ready? The key question for you is a very personal one. Are you in the right relationship with G*D and Christ; so that you will escape the disaster ahead? Remember, G*D has already taken the initiative to make this possi ble. He did this by sending His only begotten Son, Jesus: The Messhiah, to be the sacrifice for our sins; and to be the means for our forgiveness through His shed blood and death on the Cross and His subsequent Resuurection. He has also sent His Holy Spirit to indwell those who trust in Him, ...thus, imparting Eternal Life. In view of these things, we invite you to confess your sins to G*D, Himself, as directed in 1st-John 1:9 and 1st-Timothy 2:5; to trust in Christ's completed, once-and-for-all sacrifice as shown in 1st-John 1:7 and Hebrews 10:10, 12; and to allow Him to rule in every area of your life without reserve as instructed in Romans 12:1. The Apostles, Peter and Paul, quoted the prophet Joel when referring to the days prior to the Tribulation, "...whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Acts 2:21, Romans 10:13, Joel 2:32). If this is your earnest desire, you should realise that G*D is waiting right now for you to ask Him to take charge of your life; so give yourself to G*D; as the following seven steps instruct; and you will receive a gift in return which has no equal in all time, in all creation: The FIRST STEP you must take in your giving is to confess that not only have your ancestors broken G*D's Laws or "sinned;" but that you have sinned, as well; for if you cannot do this, then you are deceiving yourself. (Romans 3:23, John 1:8). The SECOND STEP is that you realise you are condemned to permanent and abiding death if you do not repent or turn away from your sinful behaviour (Romans 6:23, John 3:18). The THIRD STEP is that you must realise you are dead in the sight of G*D. You do not exist to HIM; because our ancestors were disowned for their gross misconduct to HIM. There is no way for you to live in perfect harmony with HIS Law without HIS assistance (James 2:10). You must accept the fact that you will need to "be re- born" to HIM before your relationship may begin. (Titus 3:5). The FOURTH STEP goes hand in hand with th e third. You must accept your need for an intercessor between you and G*D. When a child has grossly offended his or her father with such rebellious behaviour as totally rejecting him, the father will disown the child; he will not, therefore, give audience to that which is dead to him. It takes another family member in good rapport with the father to intercede and to bear the wrath of the bruised father. Accept the fact that G*D loved us so much HE gave us HIS only SON born both of G*D and of an Earthwoman to give us that intercessor (John 3:16); so that, under HIS Law, we might be returned to eternal life in joyful abundance as his children. Believe that Jesus the Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life for you; and that your Father in Heaven will not claim you without Jesus' intercession (John 14:6). The FIFTH STEP is that you should change your ways by making a strong effort to stop breaking G*D's Law. You should publicly declare your allegiance to Jesus the Messiah while you, s imultaneously, believe this to be true inside your heart of hearts. If the head of a household declares himself for G*D, he and his whole household are saved from G*D's judgement on the unbelieving world (Luke 13:3, Romans 10:9, Acts 16:31). The SIXTH STEP is to accomplish the first five steps immediately; as the time of this offer is definitely about to expire; even though it has been available to everyone on the earth who has been exposed to it for nearly 1970 years (Joshua 24:15, 2nd-Corinthia ns 6:2). The SEVENTH STEP is only to be initiated when you have accomplished the first six. You should share your newly found faith and understanding with all who would hear your witness. You should share with them the promise of true freedom to be had in a world where no one may exercise his or her free will to the detriment of another's exercise of their free will under G*D's coordination. To do these things and do them well, you should study the words of G*D's prophets, HIS judges and HI S SON. Study them in as much detail as you are able to do; learn to read Hebrew and Koine Greek - if there is time remaining. Get together with others who study the Word of G*D in great detail; and turn a goodly portion of your study to the discussion of coming events in the Book of the Revelation by John - inspired directly by Jesus, our Messhiah. May G*D grant you the freedom to accept or deny HIS GIFT to you without prejudice from any source; may HE grant you HIS Peace while you consider yo ur acceptance of HIS GIFT; and may HE richly bless you with a clear understanding of the offer HE is making to you, personally. Amen! We do suggest you now turn to G*D as though He were standing right beside you (which He is); and that you speak something in the manner of the following prayer to Him: "G*D, our Heavenly Father, I thank you for blotting-out my sins with the precious blood of Jesus, Your only begotten Son. I ask You indwell my entire being with your Holy Spirit; so that I am fully protected from all evil; and so that all my thoughts and actions from now forward are subject to Your Will. Amen (or so let it be done)! h) Rejoice at the Good News! The bad news is that the Antichrist and the Tribulation are coming soon. The good news is that those who pledge and keep their loyalty to G*D and Christ during that period will be resurrected to rule with Jesus the Christ. The best news is that those who trust in Christ now, need never die at all; but will be changed instantly to a sinless, immortal being.
