MARCH - STORM MOON The Moon of March is also called Seed Moon, Moon of Winds, Plow Moon, Worm Moon, Hrethmonath (Hertha's Month), Lentzinmanoth (Renewal Month), Lenting Moon, Sap Moon, Crow Moon, and Moon of the Snowblind. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Anglo-Saxons named this month Hrethmonath, honoring the Earth Mother Goddess Hertha. Modern Asatru call March Lenting. The American backwoods traditions call this month Worm or Sap Moon. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Old Sayings & Lore If March weather comes in like a lamb, it will go out like a lion. A verse: "New Moon, true Moon, Star in the stream, Pray tell my fortune In my dream. Pale Moon doth rain, Red Moon doth blow, White Moon doth neither rain nor snow." It is unlucky to start a journey or begin important works during the last quarter of the Moon. If the New Moon falls on Monday, good luck will abound. If the Full Moon falls on Friday that is also the thirteenth, it is the unluckiest day that will be. Early March is the traditional time to begin gathering wood for the Beltane Fire. A good Beltane Fire is made from nine different kinds of wood, consisting of three pieces of each kind. A good combination of woods are: Birch - representing the Goddess or female principle. Oak - symbolizing the God or male principle. Rowan, or mountain ash - as the Tree of Life. A taste of its fruit stays hunger. Add Rowan for life. Willow - as the tree of death. Sacred to Hecate, add willow as a celebration of death. Hawthorn - tree of purification. Sacred to faeries, add hawthorn for purity. Hazel - tree of wisdom. Add hazel to gain wisdom. Apple - tree of love. Add apple wood for the magic of love. Vine - tree of joy. It's juice capable of altering consciousness. Add vine for joy. Fir - tree of immortality. Add fir to your Beltane fire for rebirth. If a large star is seen close to the Moon, wild weather is coming. This star is called a Moon Dog. March's birthstone is the bloodstone: Who on this world of ours their eyes In March first o'en shall be wise, In days of peril, firm and brave, And wear a Bloodstone to their grave. If a child is born during the Waxing Moon, the next born will be of the same sex as the one just born.
